Alpine Scenic Loop Backway:

Length 24 miles, 38.4 km

Time to allow: 1 hour.

The Alpine Scenic Loop Backway begins at the mouth of American Fork Canyon on US-92 and winds down through beautiful aspen groves past Sundance Resort to US- 189 in Provo Canyon. Although paved, trailers are not recommended because of the steep grade and narrow curves.

Altamont Campground

Altamont Campground is located along the beautiful Alpine Loop Scenic Byway high in the Wasatch Mountains. The Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area is adjacent. Visitors enjoy hiking the nearby Timpooneke Trail to the summit of Mount Timpanogos. Altamont offers a large picnic shelter, flush toilets and drinking water. Several picnic tables and a campfire circle are located in the shelter. The short road from the Alpine Loop to the campsite is paved, as is a large parking area. The site can accommodate up to 100 guests.

Granite Flat Campground

Granite Flat Campground is located a short distance up scenic American Fork Canyon, less than a mile from Tibble Fork Reservoir. Visitors enjoy fishing, canoeing and exploring local trails. This large campground offers three group sites and several single and double-family sites, most of which are accessible. Picnic tables and campfire rings are provided, as are vault toilets and drinking water. Horseshoe pits and a grassy baseball field are located on-site. Roads and parking spurs are paved.

Hope Campground

Hope Campground is located near Provo Canyon along Squaw Peak Road at an elevation of 6,500 feet. This primitive site is popular for its close proximity to Orem and Provo, Utah. Countless recreational activities are available in the surrounding area. The campground offers several family campsites with picnic tables, grills and campfire rings. Vault toilets are provided. Please be aware there is no water on site; bring all the water you will need for your stay.

Little Mill

Little Mill Campground is located in American Fork Canyon on the banks of American Fork Creek. This popular campground is a great place to escape the hot summer days while hiking or fishing. The campground contains one group site and several family sites, many of which are accessible. Vault toilets are provided.

Mount Timpanogos and Theater in Pines Group

Mt. Timpanogos Campground is located along the beautiful Alpine Loop Scenic Byway in the Wasatch Mountains. The Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area is adjacent. Visitors enjoy hiking the Aspen Grove Trail to the summit of Mount Timpanogos. The campground contains several family campsites with picnic tables and campfire rings. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads and parking spurs are paved.

Rock Canyon Campground

Rock Canyon Campground is located on scenic Squaw Peak Road, far above Utah Valley at an elevation of 6,500 feet. Visitors enjoy exploring local trails. This primitive campground contains four group sites, each named after a notable figure in U.S. Forest Service history. Sites contain picnic tables and campfire circles; some have serving tables. Vault toilets are provided. Roads and parking spurs are gravel. A host is located at nearby Hope Campground.

Timpooneke Campground

Timpooneke Campground is located along the beautiful Alpine Loop Scenic Byway high in the Wasatch Mountains. The Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area is adjacent. Visitors enjoy hiking the Timpooneke Trail to the summit of Mount Timpanogos. The campground contains one group site, nine equestrian sites, and several family sites, most of which are accessible. Campsites are equipped with picnic tables, utility tables, and campfire rings. Equestrian sites each have a small horse corral. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Campground roads are paved; parking spurs are gravel.
